June Membership Meeting – CANCELLED
June 8 @ 7:00 pm
Ellen Biddle Shipman & the American Garden
Garden historian Judith B Tankard will discuss the life and career of Ellen Shipman (1869-1950), a well-known contemporary of Beatrix Farrand. From 1910 through the 1940s, Shipman designed over 600 gardens from New England to the South and Midwest. Her gardens were small in scale, with beautiful, but labor-intensive plantings. Some of her most famous gardens include Longue Vue in New Orleans, the Sarah P. Duke gardens in North Carolina, and the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens in Florida. Judith will discuss some of the characteristics of her style and show examples of recently restored gardens. Copies of Judith’s book, Ellen Shipman and the American Garden, will be available for sale.
